Prairie Tabernacle has a rich history that
shows the hand of the Lord at work. The histories of our church and of
Prairie Bible Institute (PBI) are closely connected, as the church was
birthed as the PBI campus church. Below is a brief history of the
church, highlighting some key events.
1) 1922 – L.E.
Maxwell comes to Three Hills, Prairie Bible Institute has its
beginnings.
2) 1930’s & 40’s –
PBI grows tremendously. College students, faculty and many community
friends meet on Sundays for church services.
3) 1956 – Prairie
Tabernacle Congregation is formally established as a division within PBI.
Prairie Tabernacle Congregation has a church council, its own charitable
number and operates independently from PBI, though with much overlap,
especially in sharing L.E. Maxwell as Senior Pastor/President. The
church meets in the newly built Prairie Tabernacle building, described
as the largest auditorium in Western Canada. Pastor Strom is called to
provide pastoral care and serves faithfully for 42 years.
4) 1975 – Dr. Ted
Rendall follows L.E. Maxwell as Prairie Tabernacle Congregation’s second
Senior Pastor, while also serving as President of PBI.
5) 1992 – Prairie
Tabernacle Congregation is separated from PBI, but continues to meet in
the Maxwell Memorial Tabernacle under a rental agreement. Prairie
Tabernacle Congregation is legally incorporated as a separate entity
from PBI while maintaining friendship and close connections.
6) 1998 – Dr. Ted
Rendall retires from Senior Pastor and becomes Pastor Emeritus.
7) 2000 – Rev. Norm
Backhouse, a long-time PBI faculty member, is called to serve as Senior Pastor.
8) 2002 – Rev. Norm
Backhouse resigns.
9) 2003 – Pastor Tom
Raisbeck (Pastor of Student and Family Ministries) serves as Interim Senior Pastor.
10) 2005 – PBI
announces the closure of the Maxwell Memorial Tabernacle. The Lord
provides for Prairie Tabernacle Congregation to meet in the Prairie
Elementary School.
11) 2006 – Pastor Tim
Strickland is called to serve as Senior Pastor. Prairie Tabernacle
celebrates its 50th anniversary.
12) 2007 - Prairie
Tabernacle agrees to purchase four acres of land from Prairie Christian Academy
(as part of a deal whereby PCA purchases approximately 15.7 acres from
PBI). The church looks forward to a building project to construct a new
church building. |
